If you are making IT investments but still feel like your business is not working effectively, you are probably missing a roadmap.

Without one, you are essentially wandering through a maze blindfolded.

Let me show you what I mean.

An IT road map answers three critical questions.

  1. Where is our technology today?
  2. How does it support our business goals?
  3. And what is the most cost effective path to get there?

It is a strategic document, not a technical one.

It's about aligning your IT investmnets with where your business is actually heading.

Without one, your technoloyg will keep falling behind everytime your business tries to take a step forward.

A good IT road map has three core elements.

First, an honest assessment of where you are now. What is working and what is not? What is at risk of breaking? What is holding your team back?

This includes identifying those dead ends before you hit them.

Second, a clear picture of where you want to be in 18 to 36 months based on your business goals, not your IT goals.

Are you expanding to new locations? Hiring more remote staff? Facing compliance requirements? Planning significant growth? Introducing new software to your stack?

All these adjustments require proper scoping ahead of time to ensure your IT infrastructure is able to keep up with your business development.

Third, a sequence planned for getting from here to there.

What needs to happen first because other things depend on it? What can wait? What is the most cost effective order to tackle things?

For example, if your business is moving into the cloud, you need to look at your internet connectivity first. Is your internet connection and support business grade? Do you require fail-over connection? Does your existing hardware support these upgrades if required?

Having these in place before you plan your transition across to the cloud will help ensure success of the migration and your business continuity.

Your business is going to change over the next three years. Your IT will change with it one way or another.

The question is whether that change will be strategic or chaotic.

Having an IT roadmap could make a big difference.
