IT Essentials – Software & Apps Permissions

Video length: 1 minute 33 seconds

Transcript:

To know if an application is trustworthy or not, you wanna make sure it's coming from a reliable source, such as something like Google.com or Google.com.au.

Whereas, rather than something that's coming from Google.org or something along the lines that isn't the official Google website.

So when trying to understand what applications need access to location, camera, notifications, and permissions such as that, you wanna obviously make sure that the application is only using stuff for what it actually needs.

For example, if you're in a Zoom meeting, you know that it needs your camera and your microphone at the bare minimum.

In the event that you've got notifications enabled on a website that's illegitimate, that website can potentially send notifications for you to install softwares and malware applications, and someone might accidentally click that.

And same thing with camera and microphone, where that'll actually end up... can be used to spy on you as well as your location.

It's always good to check maybe every 2 to 3 months. That way, you're on top of what actually needs to be enabled and disabled and what you actually still currently use.

For example, if you're joining a Zoom meeting for a one-time use, you wanna disable that after that use.

Or even sometime after it's not too critical, but at least you've got it disabled and it can be reenabled the next time.

That can just be found in your web browser site settings and site permissions.
